Keeper

I am Daniel. I live on Clementi Avenue 3, in an HDB flat high enough to see treetops and carpark roofs but not so high that the city feels abstract. Word Nest is my personal blog — a place for notes I would otherwise misplace, written in the first person because there is no other voice available that would sound honest.
I work from home in a field I keep deliberately vague on these pages. What matters for the blog is not my job title but my routines: morning walks to the kopitiam, afternoons on the park connector toward West Coast Park, evenings with a book and a lamp I leave on longer than necessary. Clementi is the centre of my map; Clementi Woods and the West Coast green edge are its calm borders.
I began Word Nest because scraps of observation were accumulating — bus numbers remembered, hedges walked beside, kettles boiled twice — and scraps deserve a shelf. I am not a writer by profession, have no awards to list, and will not invent credentials to impress strangers. If the prose sometimes sounds literary, that is temperament, not training.
My reading habits feed the writing: essays, nature writing, the occasional novel that makes me notice dialogue on the MRT. I write in British spelling because it matches the English I was schooled in here. I write about Singapore because it is where my feet are — void decks, wet markets, the MRT at quiet hours, rain over the estate.
One note on this site describes an evening on 12 November 2025 near 51 Chin Swee Road. I include it because it happened on my walk home and because personal blogs should be allowed to hold difficult evenings without pretending to be news. I say only what I heard and saw from a distance. I do not speculate about what I cannot know.
Everything here is my own view at the time of writing. It is not medical, legal, financial, fitness or reporting advice. If I have got a detail wrong, email me and I will correct it with thanks. Word Nest is hosted independently, funded by nothing other than my stubbornness and a small monthly fee I do not name here because this site carries no amounts at all.
I photograph badly and know it, which is why the portrait on this page is simply me at the desk, not performing authorhood. My hair does what humidity asks. My shirt is the one I write in. Clementi Woods visible through the window behind me is more honest than any staged bookshelf.
Visitors sometimes ask whether Word Nest will grow into a book or a column. I answer honestly: probably not. The format suits fragments — leaves on a shelf, not chapters in a contract. If that limits audience, it also limits pretension, and I prefer the trade.
I walk most days, write on some, publish on fewer still. The rhythm is irregular on purpose. Regularity belongs to newspapers; nests belong to birds who fly when they must and stay when they must.
The keeper page is the studio portrait version of that truth — portrait band above, words below, disclaimer in a box because some sentences deserve a frame. Return to the collection when you are done. The notes will wait, the way notes do, without impatience.
